smells good!

"If at first, the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it." ~Albert Einstein

I was reading a lyric book from a CD I just got, and I smelled it. My friend asked 'What are you sniffing?' She thought I had one of those perfume samples from a magazine. No, I'm just weird and I smell things sometimes (usually new printed materials such as books or magazines). I feel like I use the sense of smell a lot. This morning I was walking through the building and it faintly smelled like a darkroom, which made me think of photography class back in college. Darkroom chemicals have a very distinct smell, which stays on your hands for days. When I go to the library I like to smell the different books. Children's picture books with smooth pages smell different than a novel that's been sitting in the fiction section for a few decades. It just made me think about how you familiarize yourself with something new. Do you touch it? Do you smell it? Look at it intently? I felt very human on the most basic level when she asked me what I was doing, and while it crossed my mind to quickly act like I really was smelling a perfume sample, why should I? Yes, it's odd to smell things, but it's also part of how I perceive and remember moments in time and how I view the world around me. Don't worry, I'm not going to put my nose in your personal space when I meet you! ;o)

I saw this book about procrastination. Wouldn't a true procrastinator (such as yours truly) never get around to actually reading this? So what's the point?

One of my favorite authors Wally Lamb is coming out with a new book in November. I'm super excited! From the description on Amazon, it should be a good one. Not that I would expect anything less from him.

friday love.

"A man who finds no satisfaction in himself, seeks for it in vain elsewhere." ~François Duc de La Rochefoucauld

I opened my browser today and on my MSN homepage what did I see? The love of my life...Cocky! He was included in FOX Sports Best College Football Mascots. He's the only one who's not a person or actual animal, which I found interesting...so he's really the only true mascot on the list.

I have been staring at my goldfish bag trying to figure out what sockboarding is...I just don't get it.

american literature.

"Take risks: if you win, you will be happy; if you lose, you will be wise." ~Author Unknown

I found some articles the other day about the upcoming picks for the Nobel Prize for literature (AP article and Telegraph article). I think it will be interesting to see who wins after the uproar about the comments made by Horace Engdahl. Here's what an American abroad has to say about it.

I really don't have anything to say. I read what I like. Most of my favorite books and authors usually write stories that can span generations, but also hold something that can be learned about the time period in which they are written.

We'll have to wait until Thursday, October 9 to see what happens.

what's that smell?

HAPPY OCTOBER!!

The other night we were watching The Bucket List. There's a part where Morgan Freeman's character Carter says there was a survey where they asked people if it were possible to know the exact day and time of their death, would they want to know? 96% said no. I was thinking about it, and I have to say I agree. I feel like I'm the type of person who procrastinates so much that I could see myself making a bucket list and then waiting until the last couple days before I die to do everything, and of course I wouldn't get to everything because I'm a bad judge of how long it takes to do things. But the other side to that is I would probably not be who I am or do things the same if I knew when I would die. I don't think anyone would. I guess that could be both a good and bad thing, though.

I was recently introduced to the new fragrance at Bath & Body Works called Black Amethyst, which smells absolutely fabulous. But I do have a problem with the name. Amethyst is a rock. It doesn't have a smell, so I'd like to know what the smell really comes from.

Some of my favorite scents from B&BW include Cool Citrus Basil, Midnight Pomegranate, Cherry Blossom, Coconut Lime Verbena, Green Clover and Aloe, Rainkissed Leaves, Warm Vanilla Sugar, Lemongrass Sage, and Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin. Of course, most of these smells make me think of certain times of the year, or of memories or people I associate with them. The way I associate certain smells is the same way I think of songs, which always take me back to certain times of my life.

Cherry Blossom makes me think of visiting my aunt and uncle because the first time I smelled it was the soap they had in the bathroom. Coconut Lime Verbena makes me think of the week we spent at the beach the first summer that scent came out. Warm Vanilla Sugar makes me think of the holidays because it reminds me of making and frosting cookies. Sweet Cinnamon Pumpkin makes me think of fall, of course.
